“Mutiara Update” – Mutiara has become one of our regular (ie weekly) events. I shall have to admit my bias, because we wouldn’t be going there so often if we hated it, and we love it……. The basics haven’t changed, and those seem to be high quality service and very good food. Mutiara is very different in an important respect to every other Malaysian restaurant I’ve been in – that is, its offerings are truly Malaysian and properly reflect that rich mix of Malay/Chinese/Indian cuisines which any Malaysian restaurant should. (All over the world ‘Malaysian’ restaurants are mainly Anglo/Chinese restaurants offering Mee Goreng). The owner, Roy, is a formally-trained chef rather than a takeout wok-thrower, and he should be a rich man. Best dishes on the menu? Impossible to say, but work your way through Beef Rendang, Kum Heong Kai, Ayum Kapitan, Ikan Bakar, various Claypots etc etc…….. you’ll keep returning just to find out, and when you think you’re close to the truth, Roy will make you something new. Fully licensed, with lots of wine by the glass, or BYOW. Dinner for two (including a bottle of wine bought there), $NZ80-90.

“Good choice if you love Malaysian” -Mutiara is a small restaurant with fairly dated decor, but it makes up for it by being a great place for Malaysian food. The staff here are friendly and welcoming, and remember you, even if it has been months since your last visit. My husband loves laksa and this is one of the best he has eaten in NZ. My faves are the rendang and mee goreng, but there are many other dishes worth trying. When we are in Auckland we nearly always visit.

“Best Malaysian in Auckland” – This little restaurant on Ponsonby Road has been around for many years and continues to serve the best, most authenticate, Malaysian in the city. Make sure you try their Beef rending or Chicken Sambal.
